New Delhi: Spirulina, scientifically called arthrospira platensis, is considered a superfood owing to its high nutritional content and health benefits. A type of blue-green algae, spirulina is dubbed a ‘miracle’ food from the sea today by popular lifestyle personalities. It is claimed that spirulina can help type 2 diabetes patients manage their blood sugar levels.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the microalgae can help treat metabolism and heart health problems, including weight loss, diabetes, and high cholesterol. A recent study, published in the journal Hypertension, showed that spirulina could help reduce blood pressure. People also use spirulina as a natural remedy to treat various mental and emotional disorders such as anxiety, stress, depression and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Studies also suggest that spirulina has antioxidant and inflammation-fighting properties. Read - Eggs for diabetes: Can diabetics eat this protein-rich food that can give you a slim waist?

There is evidence that spirulina can be beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes as it aids blood sugar control. According to an Indian study, type 2 diabetes patients who took 2 grams of spirulina on a daily basis for over a two-month period showed an impressive reduction in blood sugar levels and improved lipid profiles. The study suggested that taking spirulina supplements may lower fasting blood glucose concentrations and reduce glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels compared to those on a placebo.

Available in powder or tablet form, spirulina can be taken in various forms. Add spirulina powder to your smoothies or just sprinkle on salads or in soups. You can also take it as a dietary supplement in tablet form.
